Introduction
The datebook application allows you to look up for a record in the address book (menu Options/Phone Lookup), and to automatically insert the associated data.
For instance, let's select Mr. Neuman's details using the standard Phone Lookup:

What is inserted isn't configurable : you get the first name, the last name, the phone number and nothing else...
Now look at Mr. Neuman's record in the adress book:
As you can see, there is a lot of valuable data that could be used by Phone Lookup.
PhoneLookup Hack allows you to define which fields Phone Lookup will return. You can even customize how they will be returned, with line feeds or additional text.
For instance, you may want Phone Lookup to insert the company name, work phone and full address, on multiple lines for legibility (left screenshot), and here's what you get when you do the same lookup as above (right screenshot):

Please note that PhoneLookup Hack is shareware. The evaluation period is 30 days long. If you continue to use PhoneLookup Hack after 30 days, you are required to register.

Installing (or removing) PhoneLookup Hack

First time installation
Step 1
Upload plhack.prc on your Palm device, using the regular HotSync process.
[If X-Master isn't installed yet on your machine, upload X-Master.prc as well. Note: if your machine is low on memory, upload X-Master-light.prc instead.]
Step 2
Launch X-Master.The list of all HackMaster extensions available on your machine appears, including "PhoneLookup Hack".
If there is a lot of extensions on your machine, you may have to scroll down the list.
Step 3
Check the box beside "PhoneLookup Hack" to activate it.You're finished!
How to upgrade an existing PhoneLookup installation
Step 1
Launch X-Master.The list of all HackMaster extensions available on your machine appears, including "PhoneLookup Hack".
If there is a lot of extensions on your machine, you may have to scroll down the list.
Step 2
Uncheck the box beside "PhoneLookup Hack", to disable the hack.
Step 3
Upload plhack.prc file on your Palm device, using the regular HotSync process.
Step 4
Launch X-Master.The list of all HackMaster extensions available on your machine appears, including "PhoneLookup Hack".
If there is a lot of extensions on your machine, you may have to scroll down the list.
Step 5
Tap on "PhoneLookup Hack" to select it.Then tap on the "Info" button to display the version information and check that you now have the newer version of the hack (on the screenshot, this is version 2.4).
Tap on "OK".
Step 6
Check the box beside "PhoneLookup Hack" to activate it.You're finished!
You want to get rid of PhoneLookup Hack
Well, you're the boss. :-)
- Uncheck "PhoneLookup Hack" in HackMaster control panel.
- Remove PhoneLookup Hack from your device, using...
- the Memory app ("Delete apps" button), if you have a Pilot or a PalmPilot.
- the App/Delete... menu option in the App Launcher, if you have a Palm III.
- Please drop me a line to tell me (feedback@ablivio.com) what went wrong or what you disliked or whatever you want. This is very important to me, as it helps making PhoneLookup Hack better.
- You're done!
Using PhoneLookup Hack
Overview
Basically, PhoneLookup Hack allows you to define your own format string to describe how you want the Phone Lookup command to return data from the address book.
To access the format definition form, please proceed as follows :
Step 1
Launch X-Master.The list of all HackMaster extensions available on your machine appears, including "PhoneLookup Hack".
If there is a lot of extensions on your machine, you may have to scroll down the list. The "PhoneLookup Hack" checkbox must be checked.
Step 2
Tap on "PhoneLookup Hack" to select it, then tap on the "Configure" button.You get to the format definition form.
Now, you can use any of the markers listed below to compose your own format string. You can also insert additional characters, such as line feeds, if you want the Phone Lookup output to be more legible.

How to define your own format string
Available markers are :
- [General] : ^listname, ^listphone.
- [Personal info] : ^name, ^first, ^title, ^company.
- [Telecoms] : ^work, ^home, ^fax, ^other, ^email, ^main, ^pager, ^mobile.
- [Location] : ^address, ^city, ^state, ^zipcode, ^country.
- [Custom data] : ^custom1, ^custom2, ^custom3, ^custom4.
Apart from ^listname and ^listphones, which are special macros defined below, each marker directly matches a field of an address book record.
^listname acts as follows :
- Insert the company name if it exists AND if the address book sort option is "company, name".
- Insert the last name if it exists.
- Insert the first name if it exists AND (if the company name doesn't exist OR if address book sort option is NOT "company, name).
^listphone :
- The address book allows you to define, for each record, which of the phone numbers (or e-mail) it holds will be displayed in list view. To do so, open the record in Edit mode and tap on the "Details" button, then choose the phone number you want to be displayed in list view. By default, it's the first non-blank phone number field of the record.
- ^listphone returns the appropriate field, followed by the initial letter of its caption (W for "work phone", etc.).

Examples
- To get the company name and the work phone, use:
^company ^work - To get the company and last name or, if no company name is available, the last and first
names, then the full address, use :
^listname<LF>^address<LF>^city, ^state-^zipcode
(where <LF> is a line feed). - To get the first and last names, followed by the e-mail address between
parentheses, use:
^first ^last (^email)

What is shareware?
PhoneLookup Hack is shareware. That means that you can download, use and completely free test the program for 30 days. You may also distribute and copy unregistered versions of PhoneLookup Hack to others as long as the files in the original PLHACK.ZIP archive is not tampered and no fee is charged. If you find the program useful and you continue to use it, you are obligated to register.
The whole shareware concept is based on honesty. The registration fee you pay allow me to support and continue to develop PhoneLookup Hack in the future.
When you register PhoneLookup Hack, you will get the most recent registered version of the program, without any shareware nags, or delay screens.
Definitions:
- Public domain has a very specific legal meaning. It means that the creator of a
work (in this case, a piece of software) who had legal ownership of that work, has given
up ownership and dedicated the work "to the public domain". Once something is in
the public domain, anyone can use it in any way they choose, and the author has no control
over the use and cannot demand payment for it.
If you find a program which the author has explicitly put into the public domain you are free to use it however you see fit, without paying for the right to use it. But use care -- due to the confusion over the meaning of the words, programs are often described by others as being "public domain" when in fact they are shareware or free, copyrighted software. To be sure a program is public domain you should look for an explicit statement from the author to that effect.
- Copyrighted is the opposite of public domain. A copyrighted program is one where
the author has asserted his or her legal right to control the program's use and
distribution by placing the legally required copyright notices in the program and
documentation. The law gives copyright owners broad rights to restrict how their work is
distributed, and provides for penalties for those who violate these restrictions. When you
find a program which is copyrighted you must use it in accordance with the copyright
owner's restrictions on distribution and payment. Usually these are clearly stated in the
program documentation.
Maintaining a copyright does not necessarily imply charging a fee, so it is perfectly possible and legal to have copyrighted programs which are distributed free of charge. Such programs are sometimes termed "freeware", though this term was in fact trademarked by the late Andrew Flugelman and the legality of its use by others could be questioned. In any case, the fact that a program is free does not mean that it is in the public domain -- though this is a common confusion.
- Shareware is copyrighted software which is distributed by authors through
bulletin boards, on-line services, disk vendors, and copies passed among friends. It is
commercial software which you are allowed to try out before you pay for it.
Shareware authors use a variety of licensing restrictions on their copyrighted works, but most authors who support their software require you to pay a "registration fee" -- the purchase price of the software -- if you continue to use the product after a trial period. Some authors indicate a specific trial period after which you must pay this fee; others leave the time period open and rely on you to judge when you have decided to use the program, and therefore should pay for it. Occasionally a shareware author requires registration but does not require payment -- this is so-called "$0 shareware".
The shareware system and the continued availability of quality shareware products depend on your willingness to register and pay for the shareware you use. The registration fees you pay allow authors to support and continue to develop their products.
As a software user you benefit from this system because you get to try the software and determine whether it meets your needs before you pay for it. Authors also benefit because we are able to get our products into your hands with little or no expense for advertising and promotion. As a result it is not unusual to find shareware products which rival retail software that costs several times the amount of the shareware registration fee.

How to register for PhoneLookup Hack?
Registration entitles you to all future corrective updates of PhoneLookup Hack and to special rates (possibly free) for evolutive updates.
When you register, you get a registration code. You merely have to enter it in PhoneLookup Hack, using menu "Info/Register". Then, if you select "Info/About...", you'll be able to check that your copy of PhoneLookup Hack is registered to you.
Note : Once you've entered the registration code, the "Register" menu item is not removed from menu "Info". I did this because removing it would require additional "cosmetic" code, hence a larger app.

If you don't remember your user name, just launch the HotSync app on your Palm device. On Pilots and PalmPilots, you'll get a message saying "Welcome, <USER NAME>. Last HotSync...". On Palm IIIs, your user name is displayed on the right of Hotsync app's title bar.

License and Legal Information for PhoneLookup Hack
NOTICE: THIS IS A CONTRACT. BY INSTALLING AND USING THIS SOFTWARE, YOU ARE AGREEING TO BE BOUND BY ALL THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS AGREEMENT. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO THESE TERMS, PROMPTLY DESTROY ALL COPIES OF THE SOFTWARE IN YOUR POSSESSION.
EVALUATION LICENSE
Denis Faivre ("the Author") grants you a non-exclusive license to use PhoneLookup Hack ("the Software") free of charge for a period of 30 days ("the Trial Period") for the purpose of evaluating whether to purchase a license for continued use of the Software.
At the end of the Trial Period, if you do not purchase a license, you must destroy all copies of the Software and Documentation. If you wish to purchase a license, contact the Author at info@ablivio.com or http://www.ablivio.com .
GRANT
On payment of applicable license fees, the Author will grant to you a non-exclusive license to use the Software and Documentation as laid forth below.
SCOPE OF GRANT
You may:
- use the Software on any single computer or device ;
- use the Software on a second computer or device so long as only one copy is used at a time ; or
- copy the Software for archival purposes, provided that any copy must contain all of the original Software's proprietary notices.

About X-Master
X-Master is a freeware application. It follows the de facto standard introduced by HackMaster (http://www.daggerware.com) for the implementation of "hacks" on PalmOS, Therefore X-Master is a really useful tool and we highly recommend it.
